Project "Development of antimicrobial and aromatic lining for footwear from ecological bamboo fiber"

The project consisted of the creation of prototypes of ecological linings for footwear from bamboo biofibers. It focuses on the incorporation of ecological linings that allow the manufacture of natural footwear in all its components, including the lining of the shoe, an essential part as it is in direct contact with the foot.

Bamboo fiber

Bamboo is a new environmentally friendly fiber. It is a 100% biodegradable textile product. Bamboo is indisputably one of the best sustainable resources in the world. With a growth rate of up to one meter or more per year, bamboo is considered the world record for the fastest growing silver. Bamboo can be used in just 4-5 years unlike traditional trees which are considered to mature at 25-70 years.

Biodegradable

Bamboo fiber is the only textile fiber that is biodegradable material. Like cellulosic fibers, bamboo fiber can be 100% biodegradable due to the effect of soil microorganisms and sunlight. The decomposition process does not cause any pollution in the environment.

Inherently antibacterial fiber

It is a common fact that bamboo can grow naturally without using any pesticides. It is rarely eaten by any pest or is infected by pathogens. This behavior has been studied by different scientists, who have found that bamboo contains a bacteriostatic bioagent, which is known by the name of "bamboo kun". This substance combines with the cellulose of the bamboo during the fiber manufacturing process.

Bamboo fiber has natural and particular functions that give it the functions of being antibacterial, bacteriostatic and deodorant.

Breathable fiber

Because the cross section of the bamboo fiber is full of micro-voids and micro-holes and its non-parallel micro-structure, the bamboo fiber can absorb and evaporate sweat in moments.

Microcapsules

The product has as an option (depending on customer demand) a nanotechnological component through the incorporation of microcapsules. The material is treated with microencapsulated aromatic and moisturizing substances that give the fabric a pleasant aroma and will hydrate the user's skin during use. The friction of the fabric with the movement of the foot causes the active principles that are inside the microcapsules of the fabric of the textile to be released. Microcapsules are tiny particles of material wrapped in another material, the latter forming a thin film that covers the former, isolating it and protecting it from the environment. This process offers great benefits to the user, since antibacterial, aromatic and hydrant principles are released, providing the shoe lining with added value.
